A love affair between the handsome, carefree carnival man, Billy Bigelow, and the naïve, local millworker, Julie Jordan. Desperate for money after losing his job and learning that Julie is pregnant, Billy is killed during an attempted robbery. He returns to earth several years later to find his teenage daughter. Of all the Broadway musical scores created by Richard Rodgers, Carousel was regarded as his personal favorite.
